"What has been one of your biggest challenges as a Doula?" I'd have to say when I labor with someone for days on end, and the birth turns out in an unexpected outcome. However, I grow through each birth, even the difficult ones. I once heard that when a preacher is asked to attend a wedding and a funeral on the same day, he always says yes to the funeral "because their need is greater". I believe all births are miraculous, but there are ones that the need for a doula is greater. These are dificult for parents and doulas, yet the additional support makes a substantial and life long differnce.

I noticed there arent many discussions going yet, so I thought I would start one... Here goes. You ahve a very young, single, firt time mother. She has never been in labor, and is not coping well. Her water is intact, contractions are coming every 15 minutes lasting maybe 30 seconds long, she can talk through them. She calls you to say she doesnt know how much longer she can stand it. She wants to know if it is time for her to go to the hospital yet... What would you do?

Yeah. Definitely spend time with her! Sometimes, women are so focused on what they are feeling, and understandably, they want to be! After all, they're anxious to meet their baby! So spending time with the woman and keeping her occupied can help a great deal, and can also help you observe her behavior and physical reactions to the contractions.
btw, LOVE the birthday cake idea.

Besides Heahter, is anyone else participating in Ananda Lowes' "dont stop being a doula" teleconference?
I have not spoken much past the introductions but I love listening in on them and reading the email replies and discussions. Just wondering if anyone else here in Anchorage was listening in and what you all thought about it!

Hello all, I'm Tammy. I am a stay-at-home mom to 4 kids Skylar (15) Andrew (14) Aaron (8) Lessley (6) I have been married to Doug for 15 years :) We moved to Alaska back in 1996 when Doug was medically retired from the Navy. We both spent a few years in the Navy, 2 for me and 6 for Doug. We moved up here with everything we owned in the back of a Uhaul. We landed in Delta Junction with $150 and 2 kids. We managed to start over and make a go of things. After 8 years in Delta we moved to Fairbanks following work of course. After 3 years there, my Husbands job took us to the Bay Area of California. We managed to last 10 months there before the stress of work and "city" living did us in. We moved back to Alaska in the summer of 2008 and wound up in Anchorage. Soon after finding a new job, we bought a house on the East Side, planted our 4 home-schooled kids in public schools and decided to stop moving for a few years. So, here we are.
Pregnancy wise I have experienced quite a bit and think that my own personal experiences only enhance all I have to offer as a Doula. I first decided to become a doula about 1 year ago during my last pregnancy. So far, I am really enjoying it. I am working with ChildBirth International to get my certification for Doula, Post Partum Doula and ChildBirth Educator. I attended my first birth just 3 weeks ago and it was awesome!
My own pregnancy and birth history is quite long and interesting but we are limited to only 2000 characters.......so my stories will have to be in the posts below.
